A consistent thread for the burgeoning to the advanced player is an emphasis on music reading, chord theory, learning the fretboard, musicianship, and repertoire. We teach a broad base of genres and styles, from classical guitar to pop/rock and jazz.
• For the absolute beginner, we begin with elementary music reading materials. The student learns to read staff music notes, names, and locations on the fretboard along with basic first position chords.
• For the intermediate student, careful assessment is made of the student’s skill and music theory level of accomplishment. We then focus on multiple neck position reading skills, theoretical comprehension, and beginning approaches to improvisation. Also, at this point repertoire is approached with more serious intent. Students at this level are encouraged to participate in the conservatory’s pop/rock and/or jazz ensembles.
• For the Advanced student, all the previous points of focus from the intermediate stage are continued to a more professional level.
Students at the advanced level will also be invited to participate in the occasional open jam sessions which are hosted by faculty when available. Students at the advanced level are also encouraged to engage in professional performances.
