Family Music for Toddlers 1 ½ - 3: A Step along the Musikgarten Pathway to Music Literacy

Tuesday 10:30 – 11:00 a.m.

Spring Session January 21st, 2020

15 weeks sessions. $150.00 per session, tuition.

In our Family Music for Toddlers classes we will delight in the endless energy of your children, their joy in bouncing, rocking, and dancing with you, and in seeing them develop in this wonderful, musical environment!  As we watch them grow, we can imagine them singing in the choir, playing in the band, or playing songs on the piano for a family gathering in just a few years. As we sing, bounce, rock, dance, and play instruments together we are laying the foundation necessary for success in music, regardless of which path your toddler takes in the future.

Toddlers are always moving! In fact movement is not only your toddler’s favorite new-found skill, it is your toddler’s most effective way to learn. Although children eventually have to learn to “sit still and listen” they can not do it yet, and engaging them in purposeful movement activities is the perfect preparation for this all-important skill.

Listening is the cornerstone of all learning. While most children are born with the ability to hear, all children have to be taught to listen well. Family Music for Toddlers class is the perfect environment for nurturing this critical skill. Our focused listening activities direct the children to listen to short examples of familiar sounds that tie in with the activities. They hear the sound of a cat after singing Three Little Kittens, or the sound of hammering, sawing, and drilling after doing The Workshop. In our noisy world, it is necessary to teach children to focus on sounds which they already know, as well as filter out peripheral sounds. This is so important given the barrage of sounds that fill our malls, restaurants and even classroom.

The Cycle of Seasons For Pre-School Age Children (ages 3-4½)

 Tuesday 9:30 – 10:00 a.m.

Spring Session January 21st, 2020

15 weeks sessions. $150.00 per session, tuition

Pre-school age children are at a pivotal point in their musical development. This makes choosing activities for your child that much more difficult, given the number of things available to this age child. In The Cycle of Seasons children will enjoy using all of their senses to discover the world around them. They will delight in discovering the wonder that nature provides on a daily basis – the life cycle of a dandelion or a frog; the preparation and hard work of planting a garden, and the satisfaction when it begins to thrive; the magical way the wind carries a leaf up and down and around and around until it finally settles down to become part of the earth once again.

In addition to singing, playing instruments, purposeful movement activities, and focused listening, the children are learning the language of music. In each class the children echo a series of tonal and rhythm patterns. These patterns are found in the singing repertoire, and they will be the first patterns the children will learn to read in music notation in the coming years.

Finally, The Cycle of Seasons acknowledges the fact that your child is excited by his/her recently acquired verbal skills! Most pre-school children love to talk, and is it any wonder? They have just figured out the art of persuasion – just by putting their thoughts into words! The Cycle of Seasons takes this into consideration and nurtures the child’s language development through storytelling and poetry.

All children are musical, but their musical aptitude will diminish if it is not nurtured. All children delight in nature. All children love stories and the rhythm and rhymes of poetry. These facts alone make The Cycle of Seasons the right choice for your child. Add to that the fact that all children need to be engaged in purposeful movement to eventually control their ever changing and growing bodies, and your choice will become clear.

The Cycle of Seasons is the right choice for both your child.

Music Makers at Home in the World: The Next Step to Music Literacy age 4 - 6 ½

 Tuesday  4:15 –  5 p.m.

Spring Session January 21st, 2020

15 weeks sessions. $225.00, tuition

Throughout this year in The Cycle of Seasons we have been watching the miracle of your children evolving! It has been a lot of fun, but all the while, we have been preparing the children for the next step in their musical development. The experiences that the children will have in the next level of Musikgarten classes are vital as they strive to become functioning musicians, finding joy in music, learning to improvise, write and read music, and eventually learning to play the piano.

This is what you can expect to see in the next level:

  • Singing with increased accuracy, range, and  repertoire.
  • Listening to sounds in an increasingly complex context, distinguishing the sounds of individual instruments.
  • Moving with growing expressivity, refining finger control for instrument playing, and learning complex dances.
  • Writing and reading patterns of sound.
  • Playing various patterns, as well as steady beat accompaniments on a variety of instruments, drums, resonator bars, and other simple rhythm instruments.
  • Many more opportunities for active music making.

This year we have begun to lay the foundation. Next year, we will build on that foundation, layering on additional skills at the appropriate time and at an appropriate pace. I hope your child will join me on this next step on the pathway to music liter

We look forward to meeting you!
